KLiZO: KapG “Girlfriend” [KLiZO Remix] – spliced with killer hooks

KLiZO is the powerhouse producer of the MDK ([My Digital Kids) who just dropped the track KapG “Girlfriend” [KLiZO Remix]. Kap G is an unusual blend. On one hand, his sound — which is a raw and gritty take on the pop side of R&B and hip hop — could come across a bit of a Drake knockoff. On the other hand, that same raw and gritty hip-pop sound is incredibly endearing. Either way you choose to take it, his sound album is one that takes a step to a familiar and amazing place. Now KLiZO jumps into the remix ring to put an even more original dubstep touch to the proceedings.

One of the biggest talking points of hip hop and EDM over the last year or so has been where it’ll go to next and what the next stage of progressive evolution will be. In spite of this genre focus, it’s refreshing to be faced with KLiZO’s bold embracing of what came before.

KapG “Girlfriend” [KLiZO Remix] falls much closer into the dub-trap camp, with the kind of tight and hard-hitting bass and drum driven beat that could have come straight from a blend of Gucci Mane and Bassnectar beats. This is spliced with killer hooks and some synth lead melodies that ring of the apocalypse.

KLiZO amorphous remix takes the listener on a diverse journey through sparkling melodic, almost downtempo moments, to shimmering hype music, combining Kap G’s steady pop-pandering vocals and KLiZO’s dynamic growling musical bars into a three-minute hybrid of glorious triumph.

This is a track that should be grabbed without question. KLiZO is in a league all by himself and this remix puts him up there with some of better underground producers of our time. Consistent and creative, KLiZO’s work is mindboggling in places and it is just ridiculous how he comes up with fresh ideas, samples and effects that sound so damn good on a track you already know and love.

KapG “Girlfriend” [KLiZO Remix] is very much a product of the times — the modern EDM and hip pop references are everywhere. KLiZO’s bass is perfect for the club dance floor and his music will no doubt get heavy rotation on dance radio stations if he pushes in that direction.

Just about anything he drops is good, but KapG “Girlfriend” [KLiZO Remix] is particularly good because nothing is overdone here.  Remixing can often lead to producers being overly extravagant in wanting to show off their skills, and it can often be a double-sided sword which ruins the original and its evolution. This is a trap that KLiZO does not fall into here.
