Rell Douyon: “Friday Freestyle” – energy and staunch confidence

Rell Douyon is a 23 year-old artist from Boston Massachusetts, currently living in GA. He started writing at 16 and began to seriously rap at 21. Though fairly new to the table, Rell has already assimilated all the ear-worm elements of modern rap. His energy and staunch confidence keeps his latest track, “Friday Freestyle”, enjoyable. Pride emanates from the verses on this song and it is sure to make for some exciting party moments. The song rarely lets up on its insistent cadence so beware of damage to your speakers when you play this one on full blast.

The flow never becomes repetitive, and with Rell’s bravado and high energy melody it’s hard to keep some of these one-liners from getting stuck in your head. I think he has a grip on a style that appeals to the youth culture, which means he has mounds of potential to help him ascend to the top of the music genre or plateaus like so many other youth sensations.

The flagbearers of trap rap have managed to make the genre an empty sounding one, but the newcomers are proving that there is hope for the future of rap. Rell Douyon is among the underground’s potential forerunners, and “Friday Freestyle” shows a fresh and hopeful sound for the genre.

Rell brings a banging bass driven sound and proves that it’s the newer artists that show a lot of promise in a genre that’s becoming stale. Even if these type of songs become memes, there’s still plenty quality to them.

Sandwiched between Rell’s bug-eyed free-styling and a booming bass, is an eerie keyboard line. The song’s momentum rolls forward as Rell animates his verses, flitting between heartfelt bars and hedonistic rhymes wrapped up in bursts of gung-ho lyrical flow. His ability to seamlessly balance the two in the same song is remarkable. The fluctuating, psychedelic electronic keys, and the beat is perfectly coupled with the lyrical flow.

Artists such as Drake, Migos, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar lead the pack for this new wave of musical taste, undeniably taking this generation of culture vultures by the throat. So there is a plethora of lanes for fresh artists to the new era of music to fit into and ride.

It’s quite clear that Rell Douyon has a unique, distinct sound but, more than that, throughout the track he displays his artistic freedom. The way he approaches the track uncovers his originality and spontaneity, giving proof as to why he should be considered a new artist already living in the future of rap.
