Freddy Angel: “Sound of The Dark Cloud” is nothing less than a captivating listen
Freddy Angel, an independent electronic music producer/vocalist, as well as a multimedia fashion blogger, was born in New York City, and grew up living in Miami, Florida where he currently resides. Freddy who studied advance arts in Miami, also played both the French horn and trumpet throughout his years in junior high and high school. Freddy Angel’s passion for producing electronic dance music was born in 2004, when he first heard the fast paced rhythm and beats of big beat and drum ‘n’ bass music. Freddy released his debut album “Beyond These Stars” in 2008, and this year, during February, he dropped his latest EP “Sound of The Dark Cloud”.
“Sound of The Dark Cloud” is an EP composed of both introspection and innovation. I constantly imagined avant-garde stories coming to life alongside these diverse musical pieces. Freddy has a sound that I feel will resonate into a new generation of electronic artists; starting off with “Just A Demonstration (Intro)”.
He not only takes an existing feel from modern day EDM music and implements it into the EP, but also incorporates a feeling of new methodical, creative steps toward the, literal, future of electronic music as well, by constantly shaping each song as an evolution in the EP, creating a progressing flow that is nothing less than extraordinary and captivating to listen to. Each song fed my expanding anticipation toward the next.
The pulsating rhythms will hook you immediately from the bass induced darkstep track “Don’t Jump”, into the breakbeat of “Deadly Sniper”, until you’re eerily drawn away into the distorted drum and bass beauty of the very brief “Bonus Track (Drum N Bass Freestyle)”. It won’t fail to leave you with a universal curiosity lingering in your mind upon its haunting conclusion. What’s next?
Freddy Angel is without a doubt one of the more eclectic music makers not officially in the main stream business. His tracks speak to the soul, flow endlessly and by the time they’re done you are hitting repeat without knowing it. This is a rare EP that is great all around, and at the same time is able to incorporate many styles of electronic music into such a small package.
The music on “Sound of The Dark Cloud” is engaging and complex enough to hold your attention, while still maintaining the upbeat rhythms and otherworldly sound that only electronica can capture. This music will earn many genre descriptions, but beyond the genre descriptions, Freddy Angel displays a free-form spirit that seeks to indulge and break through expectations and conventions. These songs do not particularly speak to any specific fancy but rather earn their right to be appreciated after multiple listening.
For me, what separates Freddy Angel from many electronic artists is that he really does do his own thing. It seems like so many other artists just piece together bass noise and drum beats in this genre. Freddy mixes it up with some very different styles, rap verses, big beats, and some great synth sounds. With “Sound of The Dark Cloud” you realize that Freddy Angel is creative enough not just to make his own music, but literally create alternative sounds for others to follow.
