EZ Raxx – “Off-White” – Melody, delivery and bars

We live in an era in which rap and hip hop music is no longer considered subversive and has been sufficiently integrated into the core of mainstream culture. With the genre continuously expanding and evolving, it’s always interesting to see what kind of direction rap is headed to with the plurality of its new voices. During the last few years the urban genres have yielded a plethora of captivating newcomers, many whom are now household names. The new wave of rap music was firmly established in the past years with the rise of artists like Future, A$AP Rocky, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Lil Yachty, Playboi Carti and more.

EZ Raxx is another up and coming new wave rapper from Cleveland, Ohio, ready to push his way through the ranks. A Rastafarian who blends Dancehall, Reggae, Reggaeton, Hip-Hop, RnB, & Pop into his style, the rapper is also an advocate for the legalization of marijuana.

EZ Raxx’s latest track is “Off-White” (Prod. By TrizzyOnTheTrack). The cut sees the rapper pouring his feelings out over warm keys and heavy bass hits as he reflects on some of life’s crucial moments. Not as much a mumbler as some of his contemporaries, EZ Raxx never foregoes narrative and tonal coloration in structuring his raps.

Listening closely, one can  hear an overarching theme, as his collection of words prove mesmerizing to pore over – full of tiny hooks that combust under the proverbial magnifying glass of lyrical scrutiny.  He knows his strengths and understands how to modulate his approach based on the prevailing sonic atmosphere provided by TrizzyOnTheTrack.

Which brings us to another critical point. Like most new wave rap music, a lot of the gratification is in the production, which here is performed with the age-old hip-hop trick of taking a fractional melodic idea, and spinning out of it a thick sonic weave.

EZ Raxx ebbs and flows with the melody, as the simplicity which many listeners will perceive as minimalism begins to resonate as a strategy for EZ Raxx’s voice to reach, in a clear uncluttered way, the heights of his peers. The overall effect is immensely pleasing to the ear, and the rapper, spelunking the depths of new wave rap, hits the sweet spot again and again.

EZ Raxx works with samples of auditory bliss that invest his raps with something hypnotic. The sonic world of EZ Raxx is rich and inviting; a musical pleasure-dome built from rumbling basslines, ticking hi-hats, and clouds of keyboard swirls.

He may be a rapper, but he is not giving us raps only – he is giving us a wholly-unique artistic view and vibe. And in fact, EZ Raxx’s holistic approach has yielded something very specific. His music feels like a breath of fresh air in an overcrowded field. He is more than capable of creating a catchy vibe. Melody, delivery, bars – that is his strong suit!
